What a weekend for Sheffield University Bankers Hockey Club!

On Saturday afternoon we hosted our Junior Celebration Event, bringing together players, parents, coaches and volunteers to celebrate another fantastic season. Huge congratulations to all of our junior award winners, whose hard work, commitment and enthusiasm have been outstanding throughout the year. It was a brilliant family day and a wonderful reminder of what makes our club so special.

The celebrations didn’t stop there.

On Saturday evening, five of us made the journey to Leicester for the England Hockey Awards. While we didn’t quite manage to bring home the national title, we were absolutely delighted to be named Yorkshire North East Open / Men’s Team of the Year.

This award is a testament to the dedication, teamwork and community spirit that runs throughout the club, from our youngest juniors picking up a stick for the first time through to our senior teams competing across the region.

A huge thank you to everyone who makes SUBHC what it is – players, coaches, volunteers, parents, supporters and committee members. We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved together and excited for what comes next.

What a fantastic day! 🏑

Over 120 young people joined us today in the culmination of this year’s Hockey in the Community programme, bringing together children from schools across Sheffield to showcase the skills they’ve developed throughout the year.

A huge thank you goes to Will Hearne, whose coaching and enthusiasm have inspired hundreds of children through sessions delivered in schools as part of Sheffield University Bankers Hockey Club’s Hockey in the Community initiative.

Seeing so many children running around with smiles on their faces, making new friends, growing in confidence and enjoying our sport is exactly what this programme is all about.

The best part? This is just the beginning. We already have even more young people signed up to come back next week, and we can’t wait to welcome them onto the pitch.

We’re incredibly proud of what has been achieved this year and excited to continue growing hockey opportunities for young people across our city!

🚨 Coaching Announcement 🚨

We’re really pleased to announce that @ashdown_ollie will be joining Sheffield University Bankers Hockey Club next season as our new Performance Squad Coach and Men’s 1st XI Player. 💙

Ollie joins after four years playing and coaching at @officialbeehc in the National Premier Division, bringing with him a huge amount of experience from the very top end of the domestic game.

For a club like ours, this is a wonderfully exciting addition and another positive step forward in the journey we’re on together.

“Following the promotion of the Men’s 1st XI into National Conference North and the Men’s 2nd XI to YNE Division 1, this coaching appointment was a critical one to get right.

Having spoken to Ollie at length in recent weeks, I am confident that this is an outstanding appointment for SUBHC.

Ollie is not only an outstanding player, but has a wealth of coaching experience. Coming straight from a Premier League set up, following Beeston’s miraculous ‘great escape’, means he brings with him standards that will undoubtedly drive forward our Men’s Performance Squad in this next phase of its journey.”

“I am excited to join SUBHC as the Player Coach of the Men’s Performance Squads for the oncoming season, to play alongside old friends once again.

Matt Godden has setup some very big shoes to fill after such a massively successful season for the performance squad, and the club as a whole.

I am confident my energy, intensity and experience is going to support keeping the club on its current trajectory.”

We had such a wonderful time yesterday hosting the first of a number of U8 Development Tournaments in South Yorkshire! There was some excellent hockey on display and even better sportsmanship by all the teams!

Big well done to all our players, organisers, cake and coffee stall runners, coaches and junior leaders (who doubled up as umpires)!
