Sheffield University Bankers Hockey Club has a rich history dating back to its formation in 1927 as Sheffield Bankers Hockey Club. Initially, the club was exclusive to bank employees and played at Abbeydale Park. After World War II, the club became open to all and grew significantly. In the 1980s, when hockey transitioned to astroturf, the club moved to the Concord Sports Centre before eventually relocating to the University of Sheffield’s Goodwin Sports Centre.
In 2000, Sheffield Bankers merged with the University of Sheffield’s men’s and women’s hockey clubs’ Saturday teams, creating Sheffield University Bankers Hockey Club, commonly known as SUBHC. This merger brought together university students and community players, forming a strong club with a commitment to inclusivity and competitive hockey across Yorkshire and the North.
Today, SUBHC is based at Norton Sports Park, continuing its tradition of excellence and community involvement. The club runs several men’s and women’s teams, along with a growing junior section, helping players of all ages and abilities develop their skills and passion for the sport.
