“This weekend sees the return of the Magnificent 7s, SUBHC’s own band of renegade bandits, ready to cross the frontier and launch a daring raid on Chesterfield 4s. Those who know me well will appreciate that this is a cause which is close to my heart. The 7th team has been the launchpad for many a Bankers player over the years, and exists, at least in part, for that very reason. Nothing gives me greater pleasure than to watch a player from the Men’s 7s or Ladies’ 4s strut their stuff in a higher team.
A few years ago, I wrote an article for The Hockey Paper (https://www.thehockeypaper.co.uk/articles/2023/05/10/when-the-pains-have-receded-i-will-be-ready-again-one-hockey-players-season) which explained why the 7s are so important to a club like Bankers. For me, it’s not about the scoreline at the end of the game, but being out in the open air with the freedom to run around, having fun with friends, and sharing experiences which bring a smile to your face, even years later. Only last week, I reminded Richard Kirtley of the season when the 7s scored 100 goals (and still didn’t get promoted).
For that reason, it seems all the more important to recognise the gallantry of Kiran Katechia in agreeing to lead the team. I am sure that you will all join me in showing your appreciation and support. In doing so, I’d like to paraphrase from the Hockey Paper article:
‘Some teams play to win. The 7s win every time we play. Roll on the rest of the season.’” – from our very own @subhcmole
